Blue Lightning: Part 1 is the fifth episode of Series Two of the Scottish television crime drama Shetland. It first aired on 8 April 2014 and is based on the Ann Cleeves novel Blue Lightning which was published in 2010.

Synopsis[]

When a scientist is murdered in a bird sanctuary on Fair Isle, DI Perez returns to his childhood home to investigate. A storm forces Perez and the suspects to remain enclosed under the same roof.

Plot[]

DI Perez and DS Alison McIntosh investigate the murder of avian biologist Anna Blake, who is found dead in her lab. It's a return home for Perez who was born in the area and where his father still resides. Anna's body was found by her assistant Finlay Caulfield and it appears she died from a blow to the left temple. Others who worked there all seem to have an alibi: Anna's husband Frank last saw her when he went to bed around 1 a.m. while she was still working in the lab with Peter Latimer, a postgraduate student; and Tessa and Bill Warren spent the night together in their room. Evidence suggest that Caulfield may have been infatuated with her. Latimer and Anna may have been having an affair and he is a prime suspect but an apparent attempt on his life forces Perez to reconsider.
