Series 4, Episode 1 is the first episode of the fourth series of the Scottish television crime drama Shetland. It first aired on 13 February 2018 and is based on the characters and settings as depicted in the Shetland Island series of novels by English author Ann Cleeves.
Synopsis[]
When Thomas Malone has his murder conviction overturned after 23 years behind bars, DI Perez has to reopen the investigation into the 1994 death of local teenager Lizzie Kilmuir.
Plot[]
Years after being jailed for murdering Lizzie Kilmuir Thomas Malone is released on appeal, leading Jimmy to believe there is a second suspect and that the original investigating officer Drew McColl bullied Tommy into confessing. Somewhat unwisely Tommy returns to his late mother's house on Shetland and general hostility. However Lizzie's sister Kate is sympathetic whilst Drew's daughter Sally, an investigative journalist, also champions Thomas but is herself killed. Meanwhile local vigilantes go after Tommy.
